What Type of Copper Pipe is Used for Gas Lines?

Pipes made of copper are recommended for gas line installation because copper is a malleable metal that can stretch without damage. But, it requires preparing enough space for an installation, as it can increase its size. In addition, a copper tube is smaller than pipes made of other materials, also its walls are thinner because less material is used in their production.

The three most common copper pipes used in residential and commercial spaces are Type L, Type K, and Type M. A fourth type is used for drain-waste-vent, or DWV, piping, which can be found in old homes.

Sizing of Copper Pipe

The outside diameter (OD) of rigid copper type is often 1/8 inch larger than the nominal size. For example, a copper wire of 1/2-inch has a 5/8-inch outer diameter. It is true in all three common types of new pipe, K, L, and M. The inner diameter of the copper pipe is determined by the wall thickness of the pipe, which varies according to the form of pipe. The internal or external fluid pressure will determine the type of copper piping specified for any application, the installation, the conditions of operations, and the local building code requirements.

Types of Copper Pipe

Type K Copper Pipe

Type K copper pipe has the thickest walls and is the most durable. The thickness of the Type K copper wire makes it the heaviest and most expensive type of copper pipe. It is used for gas pipelines, water distribution, fire protection, HVAC, and many other applications in the construction industry. Type K pipe is available in the rigid and flexible form and can be used with flared and compression fittings.

Type L Copper Pipe

It is not as thick as Type K; it is still quite durable and can be used in many more ways. It is available in rigid and fluid forms and can be used with sweat, compression, and flare fittings. In addition, it is equipped for internal water supply systems, gas pipelines, hot water heating systems, and fire protection such as sprinkler systems.

The Type L copper pipe comes in both flexible rolls and rigid tubing; the rigid tubing is usually used for internal water piping, and the flexible rolls are used underground and outside the home.

Type M Copper Pipe

There is less copper in Type M copper pipe, making it less rigid, lighter, and easier to work with. Also, it costs less than the other copper pipes. This pipe is available in both solid and versatile versions. It is most commonly used for water supply, vacuum systems in the home, and gas pipelines (where permitted). Moreover, it can be used with sweat, compression, and flare fittings.

Copper Pipes – How to Connect the Elements?

Copper pipes installation in residential areas is a tough job. Since the walls of copper gas pipes are typically over 1 mm, they can be connected very effectively through hard soldering. But, you shouldn’t attempt to solder a gas pipe yourself – leave it to a professional. Another method is using compression fitting. Assembling copper pipes for gas lines is very easy, and it should not be a problem for a specialist.
